Deepening the Connection to the Body by Susan Mankowski

As my lifetime unfolds on this earth, I am discovering that there is more unknown about the body than known. This evolving mystery of who and what I am is no longer a search for me, but an invitation and reminder to come to an experience of myself that is direct, alive, and in this moment.

In the practice of Self-Breema, known as the Art of Being Present, information and concepts accumulated over the years from many systems of thought take a back seat to the exploration of body-mind connection. While my thinking often leads me to that fascinating inner terrain where speculation and imagination abounds, I have found that bringing the attention of the mind to the activity of the body, including the breath and weight, clears, calms, and opens my mind to a new ability to simply see what is in the moment and to be with it. Rather than seek meaning and purpose through the realm of thought, there is a possibility to enter into a dynamic and continuous process of being in and responding to life.

Even though the pandemic has compromised us bodyworkers, many unexpected benefits have emerged. Prior to the recent online offerings, I attended a Self-Breema class at the Center maybe once a year. Now, I can participate three or four times a week and, with this more regular practice, I feel increased connection to students and instructors from around the world.

The more connected you become, the more vibrant your life becomes.

When you go into a forest, you see many, many trees growing, filled up with life. Where does all that life come from? Those trees are alive because sap is flowing through them. It’s the same with us. There is one energy. You have to be connected to it. The more connected you become, the more vibrant your life becomes. In that vibrancy, your mind functions with more intelligence, your feelings with more presence, and your body with more ability. If, through taste, you get to know this life energy, you gradually become connected to the Source that created it.

When mind, feelings, and body work together…

There are two keys to working with Breema. The first is to move from complication towards simplicity. When you’re confused, it means you’ve made something complicated. So simplify. When there are too many things that need to be done, you don’t know what to do, and you don’t have the energy to do any of those things, because the situation looks complicated. But say, for example, when your sink is filled with dishes, you decide to wash one plate. You’ve moved towards simplicity. You shift from potential energy to kinetic energy, and your resistance disappears. The other key is to move from diversity towards unity. You are confused because you’re only thinking. You need to think and feel and relate to your sensory impressions simultaneously. When mind, feelings, and body work together, you are moving from diversity towards unity. When you become unified within yourself, you become unified with the entire Existence.
